Gotta Dance! – 30 March 2026
Visually stunning and exquisitely choreographed, Gotta Dance! is an action packed musical revue that focuses on great dance numbers rather than cabaret style singing. The show features the choreography of Broadway choreographers who each, in their way, changed the landscape of what it means to dance on stage. Seeing all of these works side by side was a revelation, and the performers were exceptionally talented. Each number was stylistically impressive, and it was doubly impressive to see these talented dancers change styles without missing a beat.
Design elements were truly magical, and the combined talents of Ken Billington, Anthony Pearson, and Brian C. Staton beautifully replicated historic moments in each of these numbers with a dazzlingly realistic approximation of a set that vividly transformed into an incredibly diverse set of places. One of my favorite moments was the Harlem mural in Bubbling Brown Sugar. The detail in all of Staton’s projections was beautiful and striking, just as much when fully fleshed out and when pulling back for intimate moments.
The most remarkable thing about this show is how the singing takes a backseat to the dancing, and its true ability to make dancers the stars of the show. Many triple threats whose predominant love is dancing get relegated to the chorus, so this celebration of their talents was extra special. Going into this show, I knew very few of their names, but now they’ve transformed into people I want to watch and follow on their journeys. The talent was undeniable and each dancer held their own with fierce determination in flawless unity.
Gotta Dance! is not to be missed. It is uniquely putting dancers at the center of a theatrical conversation in a big way, and holding space for many iconic styles of choreography. The spectacle is highly entertaining and utterly unforgettable.
I attended this performance on a press pass from Keith Sherman & Associates.
