That’s a Wrap

Medea Re-Versed, 18 September 2024

Medea Re-Versed

Played Greek myth as a rap, a first

It was well rehearsed

And the diction was clear

With moments in time resonating far and near

A tragedy full of violence and fear

And Medea’s boiling rage as it scorched and seared

The beginning of the story was quite silly, I perceived

It felt a little odd to have the audience repeat

But the humor was deceit and I was frozen to my seat

When Medea took the stage

Showed the whole world all her rage

I didn’t find it strange

She longed to escape Jason’s cage

It was relevant and new

And those musicians nailed it too!

Going in and out of magic lights

Knowing it wouldn’t be alright

But staying anyway that’s the thing

For a tragedy with a familiar ring

That ended in the sharpest sting

Because her pain, it didn’t mean a thing

As a critic I must also write

Of the utilitarian set and bold choices with light

The lighting didn’t work for me

The difference was too stark to see

Connection going scene to scene

Distracted me from what it means

There were moments of music stylized and artistic

But scenes without music, well sometimes, I missed it

These scenes felt so different, so empty and bare

They couldn’t compete with the rest of the fare

The story’s well told and it depicts a balance

Of intensity in a world full of malice

And simplicity, only wanting a palace

To care for your family, it’s noble and bold

It held my attention, the audience was sold

Rapping’s not really a thing that I do

I hope you enjoyed my Medea review

And go to the theater

Then you’ll see it too!

Responding as a rap was a risk I chose to take

But just like this Medea, I don’t think it’s a mistake.

I attended this performance on a press pass from David Gersten & Associates.
