CATEGORY: DESIGNERS WHO DESERVE THEIR OWN AWARDS

PROJECTION/VIDEO DESIGN

Right now, projection/video designers are only eligible to win awards for their work when it’s deemed a collaboration with scenic or lighting design by the Tony nominations committee. Yet projection and video are increasingly becoming their own element. We had plenty of shows this season where projections was its own element and ought to have qualified as such.

For me, this year’s nominees would be:

Finn Ross, Back to the Future

Paul Tate dePoo III, The Great Gatsby

Paul Tate dePoo III, Spamalot

Peter Nigrini, The Who’s Tommy

Peter Nigrini, Lempicka

Daniel Brodie, The Wiz

AND THE AWARD WOULD GO TO: … okay, I can’t decide. It’s dead heat between Paul Tate dePoo III for The Great Gatsby and Peter Nigrini for The Who’s Tommy.

HAIR/MAKEUP DESIGN

Hair and makeup have been an integral part of theatre, even at academic and community levels, for centuries. We should recognize these artists as distinct from costume design, and also as the designers who have to have their work painstakingly replicated every night, where costumes are, for the most part, built, sets are done, lighting is programed, sound is only partially implemented live…

For me, this year’s nominees would be:

Sam Cox and Guy Common, Cabaret

Nikiya Mathis and Felicia Grapham, Jaja’s African Hair Braiding

Robert Pickens and Katie Gell, Stereophonic

Mia Neal, Hell’s Kitchen

Mia Neal, The Notebook

AND THE AWARD WOULD GO TO: Sam Cox and Guy Common
